One More Reason To Hate Anthony

  • Aug. 25th, 2007 at 8:28 AM
Today's FBoFW has really ground the dying ashes of my affection into the dirt. See, Therese, Anthony's EVIL Quebecois wife, is even MORE evil:

+ She had an affair with a co-worker.

+ She had post-partum.

+ Following her depression, she dared to want to go to work while her hubby stayed home with the baby.

Okay, the first one is pretty bad. I do not think it's right that she would do that. But when you're capping off a discussion of marital wedges with how Therese left him with the house he wanted, the baby he pushed her into having, and now poor hoooooomeless Anthony is just learning to trust again, I say BITE ME!

Because....remember when he hit on Liz, RIGHT AFTER THE RAPE ATTEMPT. Well, that was certainly douche-baggy enough. Hello, vulnerable woman. But no, this was while his wife was suffering post-partum depression too. ASSHOLE.

You know, I get the whole flawed character. I also get the idea of the unreliable narrator. But the thing is, Lynn Johnston doesn't seem to GET that her attempts to make us know Anthony better are making me dislike him more. I would never justify Therese's behaviour as saying what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, but the sheer hypocrisy of having Anthony moon after Liz THE ENTIRE TIME HE WAS ENGAGED AND THEN MARRIED TO THERESE and then have him sniffle crocodile tears over trust issues.....OMG. He's supposed to come off as a patient, loyal guy who just had the stuffing knocked out of him by Evil Quebecois Career Shrew Woman, but he's basically just an apathetic douchebag who makes stupid choices and whines about them to his nearly-raped ex-girlfriend. He's a Nice Guy &tm;.

BTW, in case anyone else hasn't noticed, you never see Therese's friends. (Or at least, I've never seen any at the parties she and Anthony went to. Just Liz and Anthony's friends. And EVERY single time, Liz's friends always had some lovely juicy nugget of gossip about our Miss T. At the time, these strips were coming out, I thought she was a bitch, but I also though Anthony was being a dingbat for marrying her when he had such obvious feelings for Liz. Now, I just kinda feel sorry for her. Yeah, sure she's a bitch, but marriage to Anthony isn't the easy ride Lynn makes it out to be. Yeah, sure she "took" Anthony for everything. That's why he ended up with the house he wanted, the kid he wanted, and when the fall came, he had his friends there. And that post-partum depression--women do that for FUN, Anthony, and to make your life miserable. Yeah.)

In case this wasn't clear, I HATE ANTHONY.

PS. Am not too fond of Liz any more either. She used to be my favourite char, but she has this amazing propensity for shovelling the bullshit when it comes to A.

Mistborn 2 : The Well of Ascension

  • Aug. 25th, 2007 at 9:16 AM
So I raided the Barnes and Noble the other night. I knew Brandon Sanderson's sequel to Mistborn: The Final Empire had come out, and it was on my list. (I also snagged Lois Bujold's The Sharing Knife, Terry Pratchett's Going Postal--again, because I can't find my other copy and I wanted to re-read it before Making Money comes out--and George R. R. Martin's fourth book in the Ice and Fire series. At the time of this writing, I've finished The Sharing Knife and Mistborn.) You can read what I thought of the first book here.

I will now take the time to announce that this book is a SEQUEL! and while it was pretty cool, if you haven't read book one, go read it before reading this review as there will be some spoilerage for Book One here. You'll be a happier monkey for it.

Hi Five City

  • Aug. 25th, 2007 at 11:07 PM
Whee! John and I are back from the Aquabats. We saw them play the Avalon next to Fenway, and eet was fun. Sadly, we got there a tiny bit late, and missed a couple of the opening songs. So if they played Fashion Zombies or Hot Summer Nights, it was then. But we got to see SuperRad and Hi Five City and Pizza Party and I am satisfied.

The Avalon's concert venue is actually kinda neefty. LOTS of extra seating round the backsides. Inset couches that remind me of the hamster wheel from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Translucent backlit bar windows. A bit swanker than Slim's, o treacherous thought. We had a good view of the stage AND easy access to the bar, though all I drank was water.

It was kind of John's pre-birthday treat. Although if I'd had any real sense I would have just kept my mouth shut about where we were going, and then let it be a surprise. Then it would have been Even Cooler.

We took the train there and we took the train back. Yay for public transit.
