The 90% Useless Chore

When did I turn into a bedmaker?

I never was one before. I've always thought that making the bed is a 90 percent useless chore, since you mess it up again every night, and unlike most of the chores in the house, making the bed isn't necessary for the place to be CLEAN, per se.

And yet, since coming to San Francisco, I've made the bed about....oh, fifty percent of the time. And the percentage is rising.

When we went to Ikea, one of the things we picked up was a King-sized comforter for the bed, and a shiny deep red duvet cover for it. It's so pretty, I WANT to make the bed. And so I do, and our untidy bedroom looks instantly tidier, if such a thing is possible.

I've decided the main purpose of bed-making is psychological. I get up, I make the bed, I straighten things up, I feel like the day has started.

I echo your sentiments.

I became a regular bedmaker of late for a few reasons:

1. My bed/storage room looks nicer. Imagine that... stacks of random boxes look neater.
2. It's easier to convince myself to do the PT I need to do on the bed if it's already made.
3. The cat has taken more interest, if only for sleeping on it. At least, it's easier to tell that he sleeps on the bed, what with the crater I find on it when I come home from work. I suppose this has the added benefit of keeping his fur from getting between the sheets and on the pillow, too.

I find the whole thing befuddling, though.

i like making the bed, because I hate folding laundry if the bed isn't made...makes it much easier to clean the rest of the room too...maybe I should?

Yeah, making the bed is psychological. It makes your whole room feel cleaner even if it isn't, and it's nicer to lie on a made bed than an unmade one (especially if you're not crawling under the covers.)

Making the bed is, without a doubt, the easiest, single-most effective approach to dramaticaly and instantly improving the overall appearance of a bedroom. The larger the bed, or the smaller the room, the more tidy a room will appear when one takes a few minutes to make the bed.

Of course, you can become ever fancier in your approach, taking the time to fold the top sheet over the lip of the blankets by three or four inches, and then laying the pillows neat and straight. But regardless of your approach, you will improve the appearance of the bedroom since a bed takes up so much room. Whether the bed is made or dishelved, it will make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of a bedroom.

Once the bed is made, why stop there? Organization and cleanliness, as time allows, makes a dramatic difference in the peace of mind of the person(s) inside it.

I don't think I've ever made the bed unless my mother (or the my mother that's in my brain) tells me guests are coming over AND there is a chance that a guest may be in my bedroom. I prefer an unmade bed, anyways. I always feel like I'm "messing up" a made bed.
